Optional Learning |
Additional and Specialist Learning
You will have the flexibility to choose from a wide range of additional or specialist learning topics that are part of the Diploma in Environmental and Land-based Studies. Specialist learning in an Environment or land based theme will allow you to pursue a personal interest in the sector. Alternatively you may wish to choose additional learning from a more traditional subject option (eg. GCSE music)
At Foundation level the learning is very broad and the aim is to develop safe working practices and a range of elementarypractical skills. You will be able to choose from a range of optional topics including the livestock farm, the food industry, the forest, the aquatic environment and the waste management industry.
At Higher level you may choose learning pathways that develop your interest in a particular area. These pathways are: plants, land-use and recreation; working with animals; and food manufacture. These pathways are also available to Advanced level students and will help prepare you for future employment or college/university.
In the Advanced level your choice of specialism in a particular area will be reflected in the qualification you will achieve. For example, if you were to choose the "Managing plants, land-use and recreation" pathway, you will receive an Advanced Diploma in Environmental and Land-based Studies (Managing plants, Landuse and recreation). If you opt not to specialise in a particular area (perhaps deciding on an additional GCE qualification instead), you will simply receive an Advanced Diploma in Environmental and Land-based Studies with no particular specialism.
