If you are interested in finding out more about the world we live in, love to get out and about to explore places and like to meet interesting people - then, this could be the course for you!
This exciting new course, delivered in Partnership by Estover Community College, Plymouth High School for Girls, Duchy College and the British Trust of Conservation Volunteers (BTCV) will bring your learning to life! From your school base you will learn in a range of locations that take advantage of the fantastic local geography including: sites within the city, out on Dartmoor, within the Tamar Valley and on our beautiful coastline. Your course will be delivered by subject experts with contributions from employers and organisations linked to the land based sector: the Eden Project, the National Marine Aquarium, Marine Biological Association, National Trust, Dartmoor Zoological Park and many more.
The course itself covers 3 main areas:
1.    Productive and working environments This looks at the limited resources of our natural environment, our impact on it, how it influences us and how these resources are used
2.    Plants and animals: This explores how we use plants for commercial, recreational and conservation purposes and animals for production (food), recreation, work or companionship
3.    Developing the sustainable environment This theme explores the impacts we have on our environment: and how important it is to use environmentally friendly 'green' practices
If you're doing a Higher or Advanced Diploma, you'll be looking at the same themes but exploring them in more detail and in different practical ways. Like threats to natural environments, the kinds of businesses that operate in this sector, animal and plant kingdoms and how human lifestyles affect the environment.
These are some of the things you might do on your course:
  • Study the earth's natural resources, plus our impact on them
  • Find out how to care for animals including both wild and domestic varieties
  • Look at how plants are grown for a range of different purposes
  • Look at water and waste management
  • Examine the way we use land for the production of food and fuel
  • Experience the world of work in areas like looking after horses, sports grounds or different habitats
  • Learn about being eco-friendly and the environmental issues
