The IT Diploma will be launched in Plymouth in September 2009. There will be three clusters each delivering the Higher Diploma (Level 2) and the Advanced Diploma (Level 3), and one centre delivering the Foundation Diploma (Level 1). Each level will be delivered as a two year course.

The exam board for the IT Diplomas in Plymouth is Edexcel (but the Functional Skills and Additional Specialist Learning may be done with other exam boards).

Here is a brief overview of the three diplomas:

Foundation Diploma
Higher Diploma
Advanced Diploma

This is equivalent to 5 GCSEs at grades D - G.

You'll need to complete:

  • Five Principal Learning Units
  • Additional Specialist Learning (e.g. a GCSE in ICT)
  • Functional skills in English, Maths and ICT at Level 1.
  • a Project

 

This is equivalent to 7 GCSEs at grades A* - C.

You'll need to complete:

  • Seven Principal Learning Units
  • Additional Specialist Learning (e.g. two GCSEs in ICT)
  • Functional skills in English, Maths and ICT at Level 2
  • a Project

This is equivalent to 3.5 A Levels at grades A - E.

You'll need to complete:

  • Seven Principal Learning Units
  • Additional Specialist Learning (e.g. an A Level in Applied ICT)
  • Functional skills in English, Maths and ICT at Level 2
  • an Extended Project

This qualification gives an introduction into the systems and organisation of companies in the IT industry. It develops communication, team working and project management skills that employers value.

This Diploma will be deal preparation for progressing to the Higher Diploma.

Age range: 14 - 16

This qualifiication gives an insight into the systems, use of IT and organisation of companies in the IT industry. It develops communication, team working and project management skills that employers value.

Progression into A Levels; Advanced Diploma or apprenticeship would be suitable from this Diploma.

Age range: 14 - 19

This qualification analyses and develops the IT systems of companies in the IT industry and examines their structure and organisation. It further develops communication, team working and project management skills that employers value.

Progression to university (IT/Computing degree) or apprenticeship would be expected from this Diploma.

Age range: 16 - 19
